PackExpo Chicago: Showcasing the latest technology

Laetus, part of the Coesia Group, presents innovative technology alongside tried and tested products at the 2008 PMMI in Chicago.

Packaging specialists from across the world met once again at the annual Pack Expo event between the 9th and 13th of November 2008. A total of 1,700 exhibitors displayed over 10,000 innovations, encompassing the entire packaging supply chain at the PMMI trade fair in Chicago.

Laetus was once again present, displaying its state-of-the-art, innovative technology.

Covering an area of 292 m2, the Coesia Group stand, where Hapa, Acma, Volpak and Laetus presented their displays, attracted over 45,000 attendees. Situated in the West Building of McCormick Place, this stand afforded Laetus one of the best locations.

In addition to its range of well-established and versatile products, Laetus had new cutting-edge solutions on display.

Laetus showcased its topical anti-counterfeiting MARK & VERIFY system, using an MGS conveyor belt. The processes for printing and verifying unique serial numbers on pharma packaging were clearly explained. Both these processes use the same data pool, thereby guaranteeing that each number is printed only once and that the data can be read correctly. If there is an error during either of the processes, the packaging is recognised as faulty, and is removed from the packaging line.

The INSPECT wt system also looks for quality defects or irregularities in the production process.
With the Secure Track & Trace system, Laetus and its partner G.D. provide a complete solution to the trade and individual pharmacies for tracing individual packs, bundles, cartons and pallets. A line management stand was used to demonstrate this system to an attentive audience.

POLYCHECK wt, the system that guarantees 100% print and quality control, checks the quality of the printed code and guarantees the completeness of this data to an accuracy of 200µm, which means that even a single missing dot will be noticed.

Using the line camera, displayed at Pack Expo for the first time, it is now possible to scan larger areas of up to 12,000 pixels with a single camera. As the functions are not restricted by a fixed scanning format as is the case in conventional cameras, the scanned sections can be wider and longer.

Laetus also presented the remarkable POLYPHEM wt colour camera system for checking tablets in blister packs. This innovative image processing system ensures that manufacturers of capsules and coloured tablets can reliably check their products for completeness, contour, size and surface consistency. It will also detect colour mix-up and any foreign objects that may be present.
